The redistricting plan will likely eliminate 2 Democrat congressional seats.
*** Update 10/31 11:26 ***
TOO LATE!
The Ohio Redistricting Commission, including the following two Democrats, just passed this plan unanimously.
Senator Nickie Antonio:
614-466-5123
State Rep Dani Isaacsohn:
614-466-5786
This leaves us no option to continue to work for fair districts.
There are currently 5 Democrat seats, 10 Republican seats. A Republican proposed map gives Democrats 2 seats, 1 likely Democrat seat and makes the 2 remaining Democrat seats more Republican.
If Ohio Democrats vote for these illegal maps:
They'll kill any chance at a referendum (despite national Dems promising funding for one)
They'll likely kill all chances at a lawsuit
They'll lock in a 12-3 congressional district map in Ohio for the foreseeable future.
Republicans will be able to go to court and argue that Democrats agree a 12-3 map is legal.
And unlike other states doing mid-decade redistricting, Ohio's maps won't have a chance to improve in 2031.
Ohio Republicans will continue to have a solid legal argument that Democrats agree a 12-3 map is legal until our state Constitution changes (aka potentially forever).
Republicans are saying, "you either sit still and let us cut off both your legs, or we'll take your legs AND a finger."
