Resistance Dispatch | When the Federalists Tried to Destroy American Dissent...And Lost
In 1798, the Federalist Party controlled the presidency and Congress. They passed laws making it a crime to criticize the government. They used federal marshals as partisan enforcers. They targeted immigrants who might vote against them. They jailed newspaper editors and congressmen for speaking out. They believed their political survival was identical to the nation's survival, and that belief justified everything. Less than four years later, the Federalists were finished as a national political force. This is a story about the Alien and Sedition Acts — how the Federalists weaponized state power against their opponents, and how the Democratic-Republicans organized, resisted, and won. From Benjamin Franklin Bache keeping the Aurora printing under threat of prosecution, to Matthew Lyon winning re-election from his prison cell, to Jefferson and Madison inventing new constitutional arguments when the courts were controlled by their enemies. The parallels to today aren't subtle. The Trump administration is using the same playbook: conflating opposition with treason, purging federal agencies, targeting immigrants, threatening media and universities. But the 1790s also show us what successful resistance requires. This isn't a story about democracy working — democracy wasn't on offer in 1798. It's a story about what people did when the state became the party, and how they built the infrastructure to stop it. History doesn't tell us whether resistance will succeed. But it does tell us what resistance requires. #resistancehistory #nokings #publichistory #resistance #americanhistory
