In 1798, the Federalist Party controlled the presidency and Congress. They passed laws making it a crime to criticize the government. They used federal marshals as partisan enforcers. They targeted immigrants who might vote against them. They jailed newspaper editors and congressmen for speaking out. They believed their political survival was identical to the nation's survival, and that belief justified everything. Less than four years later, the Federalists were finished as a national political force. This is a story about the Alien and Sedition Acts — how the Federalists weaponized state power against their opponents, and how the Democratic-Republicans organized, resisted, and won. The parallels to today aren't subtle.
